Sport in Iceland
Iceland is not very famous in sport internationally but Icelanders have a few times won the title “strongest man in the world” and they are Jón Páll Sigmarsson and Magnús Ver.
Iceland has a good handball team an their best result is 4th place in the European Championship and 5th place in
the World Championship and the Olympic Games.
Iceland´s best handball player is Ólafur Stefánsson. He plays for Ciudad Real in Spain and played for many years in Germany.
The most famous Icelandic football player is Eiður Smári Guðjohnssen.
Gudjohnssen plays for Barcelona FC and for several years he played for Chelsea in England.
The most popular sport in our town, Stykkishólmur, is basketball. Snæfell, the local club, has twice played in the finals but not yet managed to win the Icelandic Championship in basketball.
